Know Your Ezhava Community
The Pride of Ezhavas:
V. S. Achuthanandan, former Chief Minister of Kerala is from the Ezhava community. He is one of the founding leaders of the CPI - M (Communist Party of India - Marxist).

Narayana Guru also known as Sree Narayana Guru Swami, the saint, sadhu and a social reformer. He led a reform movement that rose to prominence after 1887 that rejected casteism (Avarna) and promoted new values of social equality.

I.V.Sasi, noted film director, belongs to the Ezhava community. He was the one who directed Mohanlal's greatest hit in the early '90s - Devaasuram.

C.O.Karunakaran, the founder of the oldest and most prestigious Thiruvananthapuram Medical College (1951) and its first principal.

C.V.Kunhiraman, journalist and founder of Kerala Kaumudi, one of the most influential dailies in Malayalam. He was the proprietor, editor, printer, publisher and even the proofreader!

Ezhavas are considered to be descendants of Villavar, founders of the ancient Dravidian Chera Dynasty who once ruled parts of southern India.

As well as being agricultural labourers, cultivators, toddy tappers, and businessmen, it must be mentioned that Ezhavas are also practicing Ayurveda.

The Chekavar, a warrior section within the Ezhava community, were a prominent part of the army of local chieftains and kings.

The Ezhavas are one of the largest groups among Hindu communities in Kerala.

Ezhavas had an extensive knowledge of the medicinal values of plants, passed to them by their ancestors known as Vaidyars, who were physicians.
